Is It True That Money Is The Root Of All Evil? What Is Your Mindset About Money?

Mar 31, 2017 |

“Bring one-tenth of your income into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this way,” says the LORD. See if I won’t open the windows of heaven for you and flood you with blessings.”
– Malachi 3:10

Most churches seldom discuss about money. From youth, we were taught that money is the root of all evil. We avoided it, to the extent of not having enough for ourselves and for the service to God.

Earl Nightingale’s “Lead the Field” changed my perspective about money. He explained that nothing can replace money in the area in which it is used as a medium of transaction. Without money, you cannot buy food to eat to make you strong and healthy; and clothes to wear to make you look decent. Without money, you cannot pay for a warm home to live comfortably, you cannot pay for education to gain knowledge and wisdom, you cannot pay the medical bills to maintain your health. It is, indeed, absurd to argue that money is not as important as other things.

Zig Ziglar puts it this way: “Money is not the most important thing in life, but it’s reasonably close to oxygen on the ‘got to have it’ scale.”

Money is used to trade for our products or services. We receive it as our salary or service pay and we use it to obtain the product or service of other people. In this civilized society, money is an important tool of transaction. Of course we can use other goods to transact or trade, but most probably you are not going to trade your smartphone for a live and kicking bull!  I just can’t imagine how you are going to put that bull inside your pocket?

Now, here is how to change our perspective on money and finally dispel that time-old error passed on unto us that money is the cause or root of all evil. If we refer to the Bible, in 1Timothy 6:10, it is not the “money”, rather, it is the “love of money” that is the root of all evil. I will quote it for you.

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, in their eagerness to get rich, have wandered away from the faith and caused themselves a lot of pain.”
– 1Timothy 6:10

It is to those who has the “lack of money” trying to gain it at the expense of doing evil to acquire it. It is to those who has “lots of money” hoarding a great pile of it to the extent of oppressing others.

A saying perfectly point it out: “It’s good to have money and the things that money can buy, but we have to make sure that we haven’t lost the things that money can’t buy.”

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy things that make you happy; it cannot buy you love, but it can buy you things that make your love ones happy; it cannot buy your health, but it can buy you healthy foods to eat that will make you healthy; it cannot buy your ticket to heaven to be with your God, but it can buy you train ticket to go to your church and serve your God.

Lord Jesus Christ as stated in Matthew 16: 27: “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” So you have to make sure that you know the limits. You have to put money in its right place and don’t give too much emphasis on it to the extent of losing or selling your values in exchange.

Let us recall the story of Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus to the Sanhedrin for thirty silver coins. It was a great sum of money at that time, but he did not profit with it, rather, he lost his life because of it. It was recorded in Acts 1:18 that he bought a piece of land with the money he received, the same place where he fell headlong and his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. What a tragic end! This was written in the Bible to serve as a warning for us.

So, how much money is enough to gain that financial freedom? Jim Rohn defines financial freedom as the ability to live from the income of your personally invested resources. That means having the resources that will provide you enough to live the lifestyle of your choice without compromising your virtues and values.

We should not let money become our master by giving too much emphasis on it. We can literally make money your slave, by putting it to work for us.
