Why have your own website and blog? This is a question I received from my friends and acquaintances. They ask me if I have a business that will be featured on my website?
To accept, when I started my website, there was no plan as to what I will do with it. I simply bought the domain junpasion.com to secure it. I also rented a hosting so that I can run the website. At first, I used it to study HTML coding for website. Then I learned Dreamweaver, a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) software to easily use in developing websites.
I then changed to Joomla. Then I created website with a blog using WordPress for simplicity on managing the contents.
My website evolved as time pass. As my responsibility on my job is to manage the websites of the company, I have the on-hand training to improve my skills in designing a website using WordPress. My requirements for personal website evolved as well. From no direction to a source of information that will help improve my skills in web design and also to digital marketing. Now I can trade my time for money designing and maintaining WordPress sites and blog. It is my long term goal to provide digital products that can help other people to solve their problems.
What’s the difference between a website and a blog?
A website can be anything – it may be just a simple info about a company to giant websites like Yahoo, Facebook and Youtube.
A blog can be a part of a website where contents are being added regularly. A good example of this content is news updates being added in almost every hour. For small businesses like restaurants, blog contents could be the daily menu added to the blog section.
Here are some reasons why make your own website:
- Your own library available 24/7
- Building authority, reputation and credibility
- Wider reach
- Advertising and self-promotion
- Possible source of passive income
Your own library available 24/7
As long as your webhosting is running, your website is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s always available as a source of information. If you are like me who loves to read books and information on the web, you can collect the info relevant to you and create an article on your website. Your website then becomes your library. So every time that I need the information, you don’t have to scour the net for the information. Although Google is a very powerful tool in doing searches, why not put those important details on your website? You can then search your website using Google? Here’s how you can do a specific search on your own website: “site:junpasion.com” +your keyword
Building authority, reputation and credibility
For example, you are a Web Designer and you are sharing contents regarding that topic, your visitors will have the impression that you are an authority on that subject. It’s more likely that a visitor looking for web designer will hire you because you are building authority, reputation and credibility on that matter.
With a website, your presence is available worldwide. As long as there is connection to the internet, you have the possibility of reaching your target market around the world.
Advertising and self-promotion
Your website is your advertising and self-promotion platform. Your advertisement is always available. If you are running a Web Design business, provide all the details that your potential client should know.
Possible Source of income
I can say that a website is a source of income if it is earning passively. The only ways I know is if your website has regular paying subscribers or earning from affiliate programs being sold or advertised on your website.
You can also earn income from sales of your “own” product that you can showcase on your website. Your website can serve as your hub for selling and marketing your products.
Reasons why you should make your own blog:
- Easy to do
- Can be a hobby
- Improves your writing skills
- Helps other people
- Can help your business grow
Easy to do
Creating a blog site is easy to do. You can make a blog running in just few minutes. Once set up, you can then provide quality contents to attract visitors to your blog.
Can be a hobby
This was the first reason I created a website, to have a hobby. You can use your website as your pastime. The good thing is that the time you spent putting contents can make your website popular to search engine. If there are lots of visitors coming to your website, you will later on find a way to monetize your website and create a business out of it.
Improves your writing skills
Providing quality content requires doing research and creative writing. This will hone your writing. Make a habit creating a good article. Ask for comments and suggestions from your readers to improve your skills. With constant practice, writing articles will become a second nature to you.
Helps other people
The contents you provide on your blog can help other people. For example, you are a web designer. You created a content regarding why make a blog for a business. If a visitor looking for that kind of info landed on your blog, you were able to help them or had shared the idea to them.
Can help your business grow
A blog can help your business grow. Providing more and more quality content, your website will become a darling of search engines. The more people coming to your website, you can provide more products offered on your site to create more income stream.
Having a website and blog does not mean that visitors will come. You have to create good contents. Search Engine algorithm may change over time, but search engines always crawl the contents of your website. The more content, the crawlers are happier.
